How Partnership Works

“It’s rewarding to see students grow in creativity and responsibility through photography.”

Kathy Abel explains how she and her husband Gerry work together with Oaks faculty and staff to offer an after school club, Advanced Photography.

[caption id=“attachment_876” align=“alignright” width=“300” caption=“Photograph by Advanced Photography Student”][/caption]The fifteen participating students enjoy their time with the Abels.  They also like working alongside other students:  “I love seeing my friends’ personalities show through their photos.”

This type of hands-on learning empowers Oaks students to succeed beyond the classroom.  Participants grow in their ability to think creatively and manage personal projects.

Advanced Photography at The Oaks is only possible because of the school’s partnership with Gerry and Kathy Abel of Bass Photo.

This is just one example of effective partnerships at The Oaks Academy.  If you are interested in partnering, please contact Partner Program Director Linda Adams by phone (317.931.3688) or email (

First Day of School

At 8:15 this morning, the school doors opened wide, and students poured into the hallways of The Oaks Academy.

Faculty and staff welcomed families to school.  Students settled into their classrooms with their new teachers and classmates.  Parents stayed and mingled, greeting each other and enjoying the first day of school.

Both school locations, Brookside and Fall Creek, honored two Oaks traditions:  the opening assembly as the year’s first All School Chapel and a photograph of all students, faculty, and staff.

Please join us at either location for all School Chapel, Wednesdays at 8:30am.

Launching Our 2012-2013 Scholarship Fund

Written by Dana Cooper, Director of Advancement

A new school year begins August 23.  Nearly 500 children will don Oaks Academy uniforms and report for an historic first day as The Oaks Academy, Brookside, officially opens its doors, joining our Fall Creek location to welcome students to 2012-2013.

This dramatically increased enrollment – by about 100 – is evidence of our commitment to reach more children in a neighborhood that desperately needs hope and stability. It also means that we have more scholarship funds to raise this year.  Our need is just under $2 million, compared with $1.4 million last year.

We also want you to know that this year we are going to test the acceptance of state vouchers.  Our board approved this pilot program with the caveat that it will not compromise in any way our ability to deliver our Oaks true education.   Vouchers will help with our scholarship need, yet won’t reduce this year’s goal as we move forward cautiously.

We hope our enthusiasm for growing this second Oaks Academy sparks your interest, too!  As you consider your gift this year, you may want to look into The Oaks Fund at Sagamore, introduced last year.  It’s a great way to increase your giving without spending more because you may be entitled to a 50% Indiana state tax credit in addition to the standard federal deduction.

Thank you for believing in our mission and partnering with us to ensure that families desiring true education can attend The Oaks.   And, please visit any time.  This is your school.

Thank You for Your Generosity

Written by Andrew Hart, Fall Creek Head of School

We are grateful for you participation in 2011-2012 Annual Giving at The Oaks Academy.  Your support helped us reach our goal of $1.4 million, distributed as need-based scholarships to 292 of our 389 enrolled students.

Because of you, Oaks students had a successful academic year.  In math, our students are performing nearly one and a half years above grade level, and they are almost two full years ahead in reading.

Thank you for partnering with our school community and making true education possible.  Your generosity is a testament to the strength of our mission.

We look forward to seeing you this upcoming school year.  Please plan to attend Partner Morning on October 3rd at our new Brookside location.

You are always welcome at The Oaks Academy.  Contact the Advancement Office (317.931.3687) to coordinate a personal tour or a visit to All School Chapel.

The Oaks as Community Center

The hallways and classrooms have been anything but quiet this summer.  Did you know that The Oaks Academy offers its building as a resource to other community organizations?

The Fall Creek location hosted the annual Summer Academy, offered by St. Vincent Unity Development Center and 100 Black Men of Indianapolis.  The Brookside located hosted the SpringHill Day Camp (pictured), organized locally by Heritage Christian School.

In addition to the programs provided by community partners, The Oaks Academy also offered summer enrichment to Oaks families.  Activities included art camp, an outdoor adventure trip, and math academy.

What summer activities did you and your family enjoy?  Please leave a comment.
