Speeches and Recitations

Eleven Middle School students participated in this year’s Speech Team led by Oaks teacher Luke Granholm.

Throughout the season, students competed against area schools in different categories:  discussion, newscast, historical speech, editorial and original oration.  Topics included conflict in the Middle East, sports injuries in student athletes and a faith perspective on twenty first century living.

The Speech Team builds upon students’ classroom experiences throughout which recitations are required regularly.  Learn more about recitations and other curricular distinctions by viewing The Oaks’ educational philosophy – click now.

Honoring Dr. King

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Kindergarten students read I Have a Dream, A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The teachers led a class discussion about inequality and what life was like during the Civil Rights Movement.  Some students expressed anger that people were treated unfairly and exclaimed: “But God made all of us!”

The readings, discussions, and other classroom activities helped the Kindergarten students understand why Monday was not just a day off of school, but a time to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to reflect on the impact he has had on our lives.

Parents as Partners

An Oaks first grader asked, “What did you learn today at school, Dad?”

“Today I learned to be a better father.”

That’s what one dad said at last semester’s Saturday School, a morning full of workshops and classes for parents.  At The Oaks, true education doesn’t focus simply on the child but involves the entire family.

This semester’s Saturday School will be held March 9 and will offer learning opportunities like:  motor skill development, narration, Middle School science exhibition, and habit development.

Saturday School is just one example of how parents are welcomed as partners in their children’s education.
