VISTA Program Overview
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a program where members create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve at a nonprofit organization or public agency. AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance and health benefits during their service, and have the option of receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend after completing their service.
VISTA members generally do not provide direct services, such as tutoring children or building homes. Instead, they focus their efforts on building the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. VISTAs develop programs to meet a need, write grants, and recruit and train volunteers. Learn everything about VISTA here!

The Oaks is not only great because of its mission, but equally great due to the clever, dedicated people who have used strategy and skill to create flourishing systems! This entrepreneurial, inclusive, and all-in work environment offered me the best understanding of what success looks like in the workplace. Americorps VISTA helped me to gently transition from college to the professional sphere, and thanks to the networking opportunities while at the Oaks, I am now director of operations at the Sagamore Institute, an action-oriented think tank. – Elizabeth Dewes
Serving as a VISTA at The Oaks Academy helped launch my career in fundraising. I was exposed to every facet of an advancement office and was given the opportunity to pursue my interests. Without my time at The Oaks, I wouldn’t have landed my dream job working as the Assistant Director for Athletic Development at the University of Indianapolis. I felt prepared to take on this role because of the experience I gained at The Oaks. Not to mention the mentors and friends that I gained along the way! If you’re looking for a great opportunity to gain experience at an amazing nonprofit organization, The Oaks Academy is where you want to be! – Gina Dacy
Serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA allowed me the unique opportunity to not only spend a year in service, but also to gain invaluable job training right after graduating college. I was so fortunate to be placed at The Oaks where I learned of their unique education model that incorporates social and racial reconciliation. Working at The Oaks helped foster the confidence, determination, and passion necessary to pursue my Masters in Public Service Administration at Marquette University. I’ll be forever grateful for my year in service at The Oaks. – Erin Wissler
I really loved getting to know the faculty, staff, and the families that make up The Oaks community. As the Community Relations VISTA, I had the chance to help introduce new families, businesses/organizations, and community partners to a hidden gem on Indy’s Near Eastside. Honestly, what I learned the most about during my service year was teamwork. As committed as the Advancement Team was to the mission, I felt the sense that they deeply cared not only for one another, and The Oaks community, but also for the VISTAs and our personal and professional growth. Since my time with the Oaks Academy I’ve become an Assistant Store Manager at a national retailer and am pursuing a graduate Emergency Management program through SPEA at IUPUI in 2017. I’d absolutely recommend a year of service with The Oaks. They will challenge you to help grow The Oaks while preparing you for life after AmeriCorps. -Willie Brooks
