Since first opening our doors in 1998, we have prepared hundreds of students to succeed in high school and beyond where they impact their communities. Throughout their time at The Oaks Academy, each alumni has built a strong foundation in faith and academics, fostered lasting bonds with classmates and teachers, and created memories to withstand the test of time.

Jonathan Burris, Class of ‘15, returned to The Oaks Academy this fall as an Oaks Plus soccer coach and shared his reflections on how the school fostered a lasting appreciation for learning, growth, and community.

Atmosphere of Learning and Growth

Jonathan attended The Oaks from 2nd through 8th grade at the Fall Creek campus. Looking back on his time on campus, Jonathan sees how the school’s distinctive educational philosophy shaped him as a student.

“There was an atmosphere of learning and growth at The Oaks. We were challenged with new ideas while supported in thinking critically and forming our understanding with help and grace,” he said.

He especially recalls his teachers’ dedication to supporting students in their academic journey while also caring about their social, emotional, and spiritual maturity as well.

“The faculty consistently went above and beyond to encourage our development, both intellectually and spiritually,” he said. “Whether in the classroom, in the hall, or even on the basketball court, the habits and values of The Oaks were always at the forefront.”

Defining Experiences

After graduating from The Oaks, Jonathan attended Herron High School and went on to earn his degree from Indiana University. Reflecting on what made The Oaks distinctive, he fondly remembers the many impactful field trips.

“Whether it was staying at a beautiful monastery, exploring our nation’s capital, or enjoying countless nature trips, each experience was filled with great memories,” Jonathan said. The field trips, often rich in educational and spiritual value, stood out as defining experiences of his time at The Oaks.

Alumni Involvement

These values stayed with Jonathan long after his time at The Oaks, influencing his decision to give back to the Oaks community as an Oaks Plus coach this fall.

“I appreciated all that I learned from my many coaches over the years at The Oaks,” he said. “The lessons I learned as an athlete, such as the importance of hard work and persistence, inform how I approach difficult tasks today.”

As a soccer coach, he hoped to instill these same principles in the students he worked with, helping them develop and mature both on and off the field.

Jonathan is a marketing professional in Fishers, Indiana, and he continues to apply the lessons of hard work and persistence he learned during his years at The Oaks.
