The 2024-25 Winter Sports Season in a Nutshell
Take a look back at the 2024-25 Winter Sports season and congratulate our talented student-athletes on their phenomenal seasons!
Do you remember how the transition from fifth grade to sixth grade felt like a giant leap, leaving your childhood elementary school years behind?
When our sixth-grade students stepped into the middle school last fall, they needed to learn how to navigate a new building, use a locker, adapt to an eight-period schedule, and much more. It’s a significant transition that always fosters growth and maturity along the way.
To celebrate the students’ hard work and perseverance, one cherished Oaks tradition is the annual Sixth-Grade Celebration Luncheon at the end of the first semester. Students enjoy a formal, catered meal in the middle of the school day, practice proper dining etiquette, and strength connections with each other.
Every year, adult table hosts guide the students in prayer and conversation. This year, we were thrilled to welcome John Hope School 26 alumni, alongside our faculty and staff, as table hosts. These alumni once walked the same halls when the building was part of the Indianapolis Public Schools system, and their presence provided a tangible link to the building’s history and the legacy of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood.
In addition to celebrating the students, this special lunch creates a unique opportunity to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring legacy.
After lunch, students watched Dr. King’s inspiring “What Is Your Life’s Blueprint?” speech, delivered to a junior high audience in 1967, and discussed his teaching using conversation prompts and historical cards set at each table. While it is not one of his most commonly known speeches, it resonated deeply with our students. Dr. King’s call to strive for excellence and embrace one’s purpose aligns with the values at The Oaks Academy.
As the students returned to their classrooms, they carried with them more than just the memory of a special lunch — they carried the inspiration of Dr. King’s words, the warmth of shared connections, and the knowledge that they are part of a legacy much greater than themselves. This event reminds us that growth is not just about personal achievement but about the relationships we build, the lessons we learn, and the purpose we find in serving others.
