Charlie Taylor ’23 recently reached an exciting milestone: earning his private pilot’s license! He began flight training in the summer of 2025 with the goal of becoming a licensed pilot. As his training progressed, Charlie realized he could combine his love of aviation with his Cathedral High School senior St. André Project through Angel Flight, a nonprofit that coordinates free, non-emergency air transportation for patients traveling to medical treatment.

After earning his license in September, Charlie and his dad participated in an Angel Flight from Indianapolis to Dubuque, Iowa, helping a cancer patient return home following treatment. Charlie served as co-pilot alongside his dad, assisting with navigation before piloting the return flight to Indianapolis.

“Being able to bring a cancer patient home to Iowa following treatment was a priceless experience, especially after seeing her gratitude toward us,” Charlie shared. “I am incredibly lucky to have this experience because it allowed me to see how flight can be used as a tool to make a difference.”

Looking back on his years at The Oaks, Charlie is grateful for the lessons in perseverance and service that have stayed with him.

“These habits helped me to never give up despite the many obstacles I faced in my flight training and to then combine my love of flight with a call to serve others.”
