Curriculum Highlight: English Tea
Highlighting a beloved first-grade tradition
What if learning geography meant tasting it and sharing it with loved ones? At the Oaks Academy education goes beyond textbooks. Our students step into their studies through hands-on, meaningful experiences that spark curiosity and create lasting memories.
Bringing Geography to Life
As part of their exploration of the seven continents, our first-grade students recently completed their "tour" of Europe in a very special way: a formal English Tea. To celebrate the conclusion of their European studies, each student invited a parent or special guest to join them for a traditional British experience at Sassafras Tea Room in Greenwood, Indiana. Together, they sipped tea, enjoyed shortbread and other treats, and participated in a beloved Lower School tradition that brings learning
to life.
In the weeks leading up to the tea, students explored Europe's climate, animals, geography, and culture. During the celebration, they proudly shared what they had learned with their guests - comparing American and British English, discussing cultural differences, and reflecting on what makes Europe unique. This hands-on experience allowed students to connect classroom learning with real-world traditions in a joyful and memorable way.
Why these Experiences Matter
Experiences like the English Tea embody The Oaks' approach to learning: active, immersive, and deeply engaging. By stepping fully into their studies, students develop both understanding and delight - cultivating knowledge and a love of learning that lasts far beyond the classroom.
